The Charter School of Excellence believes that all kids can learn and be successful in the right environment with programming to meet their needs. Since the mission of the CSE is to work with at-risk students, many students enroll behind grade level and academic functioning.
The CSE philosophy is based on relationship building among students, parents, and educators as well as community partners. The CSE provides small and safe learning environments and we employ a staff that has a mindset that all students can find success if given the opportunity.
Socio-emotional learning is important at the Charter School of Excellence and the curriculum focuses on skill-building, anger control, and moral reasoning as well. We are committed to providing educational programming in a variety of areas, listed below. The goal of these curriculum options is to provide students with the skills they need to be productive members of the local community after graduation.
The mission of the Charter School of Excellence is to provide a variety of educational opportunities to foster academic excellence through partnerships with families, the community, and the school. We provide programs and services to facilitate intellectual growth and enable students to become independent, responsible, and employable citizens.
The overarching vision of the Charter School of Excellence is to provide students with an individualized learning plan with the necessary curriculum areas that include a focus on reading, mathematics, and writing that will enable students to be successful in the 21st century.
All members of the charter school community, including students, teachers, support staff, administrators, and board members are committed to the following beliefs and values:
Positive relationship building is a key component of what we do at the Charter School of Excellence. As a result, we are committed to a social-emotional learning model. The CSE utilizes two intervention programs-- Aggression Replacement Training® and Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI). These interventions address problem behaviors in a productive manner, hoping to take these stressful situations and turn them into teachable moments. All CSE students take the Personal Development course which teaches and reinforces these skills.
Aggressive behavior by children and adolescents is a serious problem in homes and schools, on the streets, and in communities. Aggression Replacement Training® (ART®) is the model of choice for CSE. This program has been implemented across the nation since its creation in 1987 and its evidence-based programming has proven to reduce behaviors and has been the focus of numerous research studies. The ART® curriculum consists of three components; Skill Streaming, Anger Control Training, and Moral Reasoning.
Skill Streaming: a series of interpersonal skills that address various social situations and is an alternative to aggressive behavior.
Anger Control Training: focuses on teaching self-control when dealing with anger. The goal is empowerment through positive anger control methods.
Moral Reasoning: Addressing thinking errors and seeing that there are alternatives to aggression in different situations. We hope to facilitate mature reasoning, consider different perspectives and make more mature decisions in social situations.
LSCI is an advanced, interactive therapeutic strategy for turning crisis situations into learning opportunities for children and youth with chronic patterns of self-defeating behaviors. LSCI views problems or stressful incidents as opportunities for learning, growth, insight, and change. This non-physical intervention program is the basis for our approach to behavior management and problem-solving. LSCI provides teachers and staff with a roadmap through conflict, using the crisis as an opportunity to teach and create more positive relationships, instead of damaging them.
