The Charter School of Excellence Workforce Development Program is designed to build work acquisition and retention skills through simulation of the workplace environment and the many needs of the District, its buildings, and its unique programs. The focus of the workforce development program is on soft skill development, or those skills such as responsibility, dependability, accuracy, and punctuality that will be crucial to transfer to any future workplace environments.
Participants enrolled in the Workforce Development Program submit an official work application and secure a position through a formal interview process, at which point they are scheduled for their work time during the school day, earning a range of hourly pay rates. Students gain experience completing any one of a series of tasks and projects throughout the buildings and in support of the District.
These include, but are not limited to general office duties, lunch-room service, maintenance, board room service, coffee shop, events and catering, and the CSE food truck, Food For Thought. Participants are required to adhere to strict standards for grades, attendance, and behavior throughout the school day, gaining experience with managing the many different aspects of life that make one successful.
Students that distinguish themselves in this program may have the option to become Student Managers, responsible for tasking and maintaining crews of student workers on their own under the supervision of the Workforce Development Facilitator. Taking on these increased responsibilities is accompanied by an increase in the hourly rate, just as it would be in the private sector.
Student Managers must be confident and positive in order to ensure the success of their individual work crew. All student wages are paid for through grants and partnerships obtained by CSE and maintained on a yearly basis. The Workforce Development Program at the Charter School of Excellence gives students the chance to gain important workplace skills that will give them an early advantage in any future work environment.
